While robots won't be able to replace a traditional vacuum in removing ground-in debris such as metal screws and chunks of orzo pasta, they are excellent in sweeping dust, crumbs and hair from pets. The best models have intelligent navigation technology and object avoidance capabilities that allow them to maneuver around toys, cords and other household obstacles.
1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO
The iRobot Roomba i3+ is a great robot vacuum that comes with many smart features that make it easier to maintain. Its automatic bin emptying is one of the most convenient features we've seen on an iRobot and it's compatible with hard floors as well as carpets. The app walks you through the entire process. It's also easy to use and set up. Its ability to restart where it left off in our tests is an additional impressive feature. It was able to do this for 77 minutes in one cleaning, and then the battery died.
Contrary to other robovacs that we tested, the i3+ EVO has self-emptying bins that dump debris into an external dirt compartment on its charging base when it's filled. This helps reduce the need for hands-on maintenance and also helps prevent the i3+ EVO from overfilling, but it still requires manually empty after each cleaning session. The i3+ EVO's inner dust bin can hold 2.4L of trash and is more than enough to get it through four or five cleaning sessions before you need to replace it.
Like the i7model, this model is equipped with state-of-the-art floor tracking sensors to create maps and navigate neat rows. The i3+ EVO can only keep one map, whereas the i7 is able to store multiple. The i7's map can be used to create virtual barriers and no-go zones however, not the i3+ EVO.
The i3+ EVO is more effective of removing debris from the surface compared to some other robovacs we've reviewed, but it is not the best in cleaning edges and corners. It's also less gentle on furniture, despite being fairly quiet. It moved chairs away from walls and made some collisions with the sides of our bed, and it got stuck on cords and toys during our testing.
2. Black & Decker Q5 Pro
Whether you're expanding your collection of robot vacuums, or are just starting out using one, the Q5 Pro is a great choice. It features an elegant design with a powerful navigation system, as well as effective automation at a reasonable price. It's the best pound-for-pound model currently available and is even better than some of Roborock's much pricier models in a variety of ways.
This robot does an excellent job of cleaning floors with no dust and its avoidance technology helps it steer clear of furniture legs and other obstacles. Its 240-minute runtime is very generous compared to others we've tried. If the battery is depleted it returns to its dock and recharges before resuming cleaning where it left off. You can manage the Q5 Pro using the app or voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
This is one of the first robots we've seen incorporate 3D mapping. This, in conjunction with other innovations, makes it excel in our mopping and vacuuming tests. You can schedule cleaning times, set no-go zones and see the battery's status among other things. The app is simple to use, however it isn't compatible with Apple HomeKit. The feature is scheduled to be added in 2025. As of November 1, Apple has updated a footnote on its website to indicate that the feature will be delayed until 2025. A few other robots aren't compatible with HomeKit, but many of them are compatible with Siri Shortcuts.
